Veterans with Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma Veterans Center
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that has greatly impacted the veteran community with one-third of all cases being veterans. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused from being exposed to an industrial building material called asbestos.
The U.S. Military used asbestos for its fire retardant and insulating properties. This made it seem like a miracle product in the military. The military was unaware of the deadly health risks associated with asbestos. Asbestos manufacturers hid this information from the government and the public at large, and they continued to sell asbestos products.
Eventually OSHA began implementing limits on asbestos use and the truth came out about it’s deadly side effects. For many, it was too late. Each Military branch used asbestos until the 1970’s when the military began to systematically phase out it’s use of asbestos products. It is virtually impossible to eliminate all asbestos because it was so widely used. Many veterans we’re exposed to asbestos from their service in the military, which caused a high rate of veterans to develop mesothelioma.
Symptoms of mesothelioma don’t appear until about 15 to 45 years after a person has been exposed to it. Common symptoms range from shortness of breath to weight loss and chest pain. Since there are few symptoms of mesothelioma that are unique to the disease, mesothelioma is often mistaken for other diseases and misdiagnosed.
If you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, there are a few different mesothelioma treatments that are available to you. Mesothelioma is treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Some patients receive experimental treatments through clinical trials, but the best chances of long-term survival are with surgery.
Something a lot of veterans don’t know is that many veteran patients are entitled to compensation as a result of developing this disease. The process of getting surgery and chemotherapy is very expensive, not to mention the physical and emotional pain that you endure going through it all. Most veterans suffering from a service-related asbestos disease never bother to file for VA Disability Compensation and/or Pension Claims; either because they don’t think they are eligible, or simply assume the VA will deny them. However, most are eligible and can qualify for benefits.
The Mesothelioma Veterans Center (MVC) was founded by a Retired Navy Veteran and Veteran Advocates. Their mission is to provide support and guidance to veterans who are diagnosed with mesothelioma. The MVC has helped hundreds of veterans get approved for their VA benefits and helped them find the best medical treatment possible. To that end, they strive to provide veterans the best information, advice, and assistance they possibly can.
