Do I qualify?
You may qualify for VA pension if:
- You are permanently and totally disabled for reasons other than your own willful misconduct.
- You are considered to have low income.
- You are age 65 or older.
- You served on active military for 90 days or more. At least one day must have been during a period of war.*
- You were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
- You are a holder of the Medal of Honor.
* If you entered active duty on or after September 8, 1980, or you were an officer who entered active duty on or after October 16, 1981, you may have to meet a longer minimum period of active duty.
How is the pension amount determined?
Payments are made to bring your total countable income, including other retirement and Social Security income, to a level set by Congress. Payments will be reduced by the amount of countable income received by you, your spouse or your dependent children. Nursing home or domiciliary care may reduce pension benefits as well.
